  • This event has passed.

Join us for our second lecture of 2023! March 23, 2023, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory.

Dr. Sally D. Hacker will present on “Dune Grasses, Sand, and Coastal Function and Services.” For centuries, coastal dunes have provided humans with important services such as coastal protection, recreation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. They occur at most latitudes on Earth and cover over a third of the world’s ice-free coastline. They form at low-lying coastal margins where sand transported by oceanic waves and wind combines with vegetation to produce dynamic backshore structures. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker synthesizes field surveys and a suite of interdisciplinary laboratory, mesocosm, and computer modeling studies to examine the relative role of dune grasses and sand supply in determining dune shape. She focuses on how dune grasses have transformed sandy US coastlines to produce variable levels of coastal hazard exposure and other critical services.
