DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits in the month of December. The focus of one exhibit will be on commemorating the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the focus of the other exhibit will be on exploring Christmas During the War. These two exhibits will open Tuesday\, November 29 and be on display until Saturday\, December 31. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. (The museum will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.) \nIn honor of the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting an exhibit commemorating this dark day in America’s history. World War II came home for the United States on December 7\, 1941\, when the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the US Western Fleet at the American base Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy”. Learn about those that planned the attack\, the sole Japanese POW taken\, and the heroic efforts by Doris Miller of the USS West Virginia to shoot down attacking Japanese planes. This attack resulted in the declaration of war with Japan and the US entering World War II. Luckily\, the Pacific Fleet’s aircraft carriers were at sea on that day\, and escaped damage to fight later. “Remember Pearl Harbor” became the rallying cry of Americans as they enlisted by the thousands and built up the immense industrial effort needed to achieve victory in 1945. \nThe second special exhibit for this month will reflect on what Christmas was like during the war. Americans had to learn to do with less during the years they were fully engaged in fighting World War II. That had a significant impact on every aspect of American life including how Christmas was celebrated. Americans were encouraged to make their own toys and decorations\, and commercially-made gifts emphasized materials that were not needed for war\, including cloth\, paper and wood. For example the popular Lionel Train toys were converted to cardboard and people learned how to cook and bake with corn syrup once sugar became scarce. At this Welcome Station\, the Chamber will be promoting the area’s small local businesses and sharing information on members’ sales and specials on a treasure shopping guide. Helping customers find and take advantage of sales and promotions on this special day. The streets will be lined with luminaries and filled with holiday spirit. Merchants will be open late\, and carolers will echo through the streets\, filling the evening with the Holiday spirit. Santa will arrive via shrimp boat at 4 pm at Riverfront Park on Water Street. He will be at the park to hear all the children’s Christmas wishes. DESCRIPTION:Lantern Fest will be celebrated on Saturday\, November 19 from 6-10 pm on the park grounds at Crooked River Lighthouse\, 1975 Highway 98 West\, Carrabelle Beach\, FL. This unique\, outdoor festival\, best known for its awesome display of over a hundred colorful\, hanging lanterns\, lights up the night with magic and history at the 1895 maritime landmark. Special activities include amazing music by The Bottom Dollar Boys\, the spectacular “glow-in-the-dark” performance from the Tallahassee Community College Dance Company\, special evening tower climbs\, ancient craft demonstrations\, enchanting glowing lantern display\, museum displays\, gift shop\, and delicious food and desserts. Don’t miss this evening of music\, dance\, night tower climbs\, glowing lanterns and yummy food. Tickets will be on sale soon. \nFeatured on the program will be a remarkably gifted and entertaining musical group\, The Bottom Dollar Boys. This group has been delighting audiences for over 40 years\, with traditional Bluegrass harmonies and mighty fine pickin’. They’ve been toilin’ in the fields of Bluegrass\, Old Country\, Gospel\, Americana with a pinch of Blues. \nIn addition\, the talented Tallahassee Community College Dance Company will dazzle guests on the outdoor stage with their superb choreography\, amazing talent and imaginative use of glow-in-the-dark props and illusions. The TCC Dance Company has been inspiring creative dancers for over 20 years years and the college has an admirable outreach program which enables these students to perform for audiences all over the state.
