SUMMARY:Apalachicola Mardi Gras Barkus Parade & Street Festival
DESCRIPTION:“Git Along Li’l Doggies”. … dust off your boots\, grab your cowboy hat and bring your canine companions \nCome and celebrate Mardi Gras Apalach style with a street festival and parade of costumed dog and their people! The theme for the 2024 event is “Git Along Li’l Doggies” so dust off your boots\, grab your cowboy hat and bring your canine companions for a day of fun and excitement. Saddle up and join us on Saturday\, February 24\, 2024! This is going to be one fun-filled day that y’all won’t want to miss. \nThe parade isn’t just for fun. It’s also for a good cause. We’re partnering with local animal rescues to raise awareness and funds for animals in need. Not only will you have a great time\, you’ll also be making a difference for injured animals and those looking for their forever homes. \nYou and your four-legged friends are sure to have a rooting’ tootin’ good time. Mark your calendars and get ready to join us for a paw-some day! \nThe festivities will start at 11:00 am at Apalachicola’s Riverfront Park with live entertainment\, local food vendors and a variety of arts and craft vendors to enjoy while strolling through the park. The parade of decorated golf carts\, boats\, floats\, and walkers – both the four-legged and two-legged kind – begins at 1:00 pm. The parade begins at Riverfront Park in Apalachicola\, FL and winds through town\, ending back at the park where the party will continue with all kinds of raucous fun. Registration is $5 for walkers\, $25 for golf carts\, and $50 for floats. Dogs\, of course\, are free. \nThe King and Queen of Apalachicola’s Mardi Gras parade are always shelter animals who are ready for a forever home. As always\, they will have a place of honor in the parade. \nIn the tradition of the Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers\, profits from the parade will be donated to help care for the animals of the Forgotten Coast of Florida. Beneficiaries have included Franklin County Humane Society\, the Florida Wild Mammal Association and the Apalachicola Dog Park. We greatly appreciate the support of the local businesses and families who sponsor the Krewe in its tradition of charity and service to the animals. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:February Sunset & Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The February Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Saturday\, February 24\, 2024. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first come\, first served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 6:00pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 6:35 p.m. and the “Snow” or “Trapper’s” moon will rise at 6:54 p.m. on February 24th. The February full moon is called the Snow moon because while January is traditionally the coldest month of the year in the northern hemisphere\, the heaviest snow usually falls a month later\, in February. It’s only natural then that the name for February’s full moon among Native American tribes of the north and east was the Full Snow Moon. To the early American colonists\, the optimal time for trapping beaver\, fox and mink was the dead of winter when these animals’ coats were at their fullest. So to them\, February’s moon was known as the Trapper’s Moon. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers Series
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries hosts another one of its popular writers’ programs entitled\, “Pen to Paper” on Monday\, March 4 at 2 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. This session will feature authors Tiffany Jo Howell and Sidsel ‘Sid’ McOmie. \nDuring the series authors will discuss and share the works they have written and those that are in progress. This will be followed by a question and answer session. These friendly and informal sessions are a chance to meet these area authors and ask questions about their experiences. They are open to anyone interested in learning more about these writers or the writing process. There is no charge to attend and the public is welcome. \nTiffany Howell originally hails from Minnesota but now lives with her husband and cat on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Since her early days\, Tiffany has been telling stories of helping her friends get in trouble and instigating mischief. Maybe she never grew up because children still gravitate to her wherever she goes. Perhaps this is why writing in an easy voice for the younger ones comes naturally to her. Tiffany is the author of The Finder’s Tales: Marco. Tiffany has almost finished working on a new book. \nSid McOmie has been an avid cook for many years\,  and cooks not only for friends and family\, but also occasionally as an in-house chef. She has authored and published three cookbooks and should have at least two more books published if not more by February. Her currently published cookbooks include Nibbles and Bits\, Simple Shrimp Recipes\, and Hygge Danish Food. The last showcases her Danish background and the food she learned cooking with her mother. Sid says\, “The recipes in the book are mostly the ones that I learned from my mother and ones that I’ve been making most of my adult life. They’re the everyday meals many Danes eat.” \nThis series is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries. For more information on this event\, please contact the Carrabelle Branch Library at (850) 697-2366. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Canine Military Veterans and Cartoonists in WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, March 5 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to recognize and honor the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com
