SUMMARY:Legend of Tate’s Hell: History Program
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum presents a history program entitled “The Legend of Tate’s Hell.” This program will explore the many facets of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, the fate of Cebe Tate\, and how Tate’s Hell State Forest got its name. The FSU Department of Communications’ 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell\,” will be shown. This program will be held Saturday\, March 18\, 2023\, from 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. There is no charge for this event. \nThe film’s opening line says\, “In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry through the continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend\, ballad\, proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom.” Richard M. Corson in American Folklore \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. Sponsored by C-Quarters Marina and Shaun Donahoe Realty. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Seating is limited\, and masks are optional. Attendees are asked to follow health guidelines. For more information\, contact 850-697-2141. \nPictured below are Cebe Tate and his parents (Jebediah Tate & unnamed wife) \n \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Apalachicola Area Historical Society: Spring Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Apalachicola Area Historical Society Spring Speaker Series: “The Enduring Botanical Legacy of Apalachicola’s Dr. A. W. Chapman\, M.D.” \nThe Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will present a program on “The Enduring Botanical Legacy of Apalachicola’s Dr. A. W. Chapman\, M.D.\,” featuring Rebecca W. Dolan\, Ph.D.\, as part of their Spring Speaker Series. This program will be held on Saturday\, March 18\, 2023\, at 4:00 PM at the Raney Carriage House\, 126 Market Street\, Apalachicola\, FL. Guests are invited to hear about the legacy of Chapman\, who first published the “Flora of the Southern United States” in 1860. This publication was the first time the plants of this region were depicted and described. This session will include a dive into the fascinating but arcane way plants new to science are named and the archived specimens and documents supporting the process. \nRebecca W. Dolan\, Ph.D.\, is the retired Director of the Friesner Herbarium at Butler University in Indianapolis\, IN. She has written several publications and was a faculty affiliate at the Center for Urban Ecology and Sustainability. She is a resident of Franklin County\, FL. \nAdditional Spring Speaker Series events are scheduled for April 22 and May 20. These Speakers’ events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society held through May on Saturdays\, mid-month\, at 4:00 PM in the Raney Carriage House. Local and visiting history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for quite a few years. Previous speakers have spoken about Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side\, Territorial City St Joseph\, Early Maps of the area\, Niles Register Florida History\, the ice delivery industry\, Cemetery Preservation\, Apalachicola Historic Squares\, and more. \nThe Raney House Museum is located at 128 Market Street at the corner of Avenue F in historic downtown Apalachicola and is open from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\, Tuesday through Saturday.  Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series – Dr. Sally D. Hacker
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second lecture of 2023! March 23\, 2023\, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory. \nDr. Sally D. Hacker will present on “Dune Grasses\, Sand\, and Coastal Function and Services.” For centuries\, coastal dunes have provided humans with important services such as coastal protection\, recreation\, carbon sequestration\, and biodiversity conservation. They occur at most latitudes on Earth and cover over a third of the world’s ice-free coastline. They form at low-lying coastal margins where sand transported by oceanic waves and wind combines with vegetation to produce dynamic backshore structures. In this presentation\, Dr. Hacker synthesizes field surveys and a suite of interdisciplinary laboratory\, mesocosm\, and computer modeling studies to examine the relative role of dune grasses and sand supply in determining dune shape. She focuses on how dune grasses have transformed sandy US coastlines to produce variable levels of coastal hazard exposure and other critical services. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Meet the Artist Reception – for Artist Bradlee Shanks
DESCRIPTION:Rio Carrabelle is inviting guests to an opening reception with outstanding artist Bradlee Shanks on Saturday\, March 25th from 6-9 pm in the historic Rio Carrabelle Building. This exhibit\, entitled Dog Island Jewels\, was inspired by the beautiful nature found on Dog Island along the Forgotten Coast\, a place for escape and discovery. The highly detailed landscapes have been described as “alluring and imaginative”. They are created by a labor-intensive process: applying up to 70 layers of braille ink\, building texture and depth in these unique pieces of art. The result is highly reflective\, causing light to move across the face of the art as the viewer approaches. The surface and colors of his work are notable for their subtle nuances and amazing vibrancy. Photographs do not do these artworks justice. They must be seen in person. Guests are encouraged to see Bradlee’s stunning art and hear from the artist himself while enjoying live music and refreshments. \nMr. Shanks is a recognized leader in the area of digitally mediated printmaking. His masterful technique constructs an intricate reality\, combining drawn\, photographic and digital processes. Bradlee says the act of making art is\, “a joyful process for me – which comes from the mind’s delight coupled with years of artistic practice. I have been a practitioner of many different kinds of processes: exploiting the language of painterly\, drawn\, digital and photomechanical printmaking. The body of work is eclectic and idiosyncratic. What inspires me is trust in the idea that something deeply personal is also\, simultaneously\, universal.” \nMr. Shanks received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the University of South Dakota and a Master’s in Fine Arts from Arizona State University. He has exhibited in over 150 national and international group exhibitions\, in addition to exhibits at the University of Alabama\, Auburn University\, the University of Georgia\, University of Alaska and Tampa area galleries. \nIn addition to his extensive exhibitions\, Mr. Shanks has served as a panelist and demonstrator at numerous national and international printmaking conferences. His work is in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC\, the Fogg Museum in Boston\, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. He was a professor and the head of Printmaking at the University of South Florida for 34 years until he retired in 2020. (And is now a full-time artist.) \nThis exhibition of Bradlee’s distinctive and engaging artworks is on display at Rio Carrabelle Art Gallery Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 am -3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida. Rio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art and music destination located in beautiful Carrabelle. SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Remembers the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, April 4\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. The arrested and detained groups included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled\, and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos\, and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to see this sobering exhibit and help our society remember those victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. And this year will be remembered on Wed\, Apr 19\, 2023. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \n      \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com
