DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting history program entitled\, “The Battle of Natural Bridge”. Dale Cox is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture and has won numerous awards. \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. Sponsored by C-Quarters Marina and Shaun Donahoe Realty. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Seating will be limited and masks are optional. Attendees are asked to follow health guidelines including social distancing and sanitizing hands. For more information\, contact 850-697-2141. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Souper Celebration: Soup\, Bread\, and Book Sale and Event
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Franklin County Public Libraries will be hosting a Souper Celebration: Soup\, Bread & Book Sale at the Eastpoint Branch Library\, 160 Hickory Dip Rd in Eastpoint FL on Saturday\, January 21\, 2023\, from 10 am-2pm with delicious homemade soups\, freshly baked artisan breads and baked goods\, vintage books\, live music\, art and more. The proceeds from this event support the local library programs in Eastpoint and Carrabelle. \n\n\nLocal residents and businesses bring their delicious made-from-scratch soups like seafood gumbos\, seafood bisques\, chuck wagon chili\, Brunswick stew\, and more and freshly baked artisan breads for the Friends volunteers to sell. Past years featured a dozen different soups ranging from exotic to healthy to old-fashioned. The soups and breads sell out very fast so visitors are encouraged to come early to get the best selection. Vintage and used books and used DVDs for all ages are also available for purchase. \n\n\nThis event will also offer a focus on local culture and art\, with live music from the “Ukulilies”. In addition\, local artists and artisans from the Carrabelle Artist Association and the SGI Quilters Group will be showcasing some of their stunning local art and goods. This is a family friendly event and all are welcome. For those unable to make this date\, there will be another Souper Celebration on Saturday\, February 18\, from 10 am- 2pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. \n\n\nThe Souper Celebration continues a legacy started by Jackie Gay back in 1998. In 1998\, Jackie Gay\, who was an avid supporter of the library\, entered her delicious gumbo into the Newman’s Own and Good Housekeeping Recipe Contest. She won and was presented a check by Paul Newman for $50\,000. She donated the proceeds to building the Carrabelle library. Today community volunteers honor Jackie Gay and continue her tradition by providing their own gumbos\, soups\, and chili to raise funds in support of the Franklin County libraries. \n\n\nThis year the community’s help is needed more than ever. Previously the Rock by the Sea event provided significant funding for the Franklin County library programs. This event has now relocated to Destin and will no longer be supporting local programs in Franklin County. More than ever donations of soups and baked good from individuals and businesses as well as event sponsors are needed to offset this significant loss of funding. Sign-up sheets for soup\, bread\, and baked goods will be in the Eastpoint and Carrabelle libraries. This funding supports library programs like the Summer Reading Program\, Storytimes\, ANIME Club\, Book Chats\, Lego Club and more. In addition\, the Eastpoint library building is maintained by the Friends with a portion of the cost offset by funding from Franklin County government. The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries is a 501(c)(3) organization and most donations are tax-deductible. \n\n\nFunded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. For more information or to make a donation\, please contact the Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries at ffcplflorida@gmail.com or https://www.facebook.com/ffcplfl. \n\n\n  \n\nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Event Postponed: Post Modern Jazz Trio at Rio Carrabelle
DESCRIPTION:Rio Carrabelle’s music series continues on Saturday\, January 28 at 7:30 pm with a collaboration of exceptional music and stunning art in the historic Rio Carrabelle. This week Rio will be delighted by the sounds of the talented Post Modern Jazz Trio. This dynamic jazz trio is made up of Florida A&M University Music Professor and bassist\, Brian Hall\, along with Joe Goldberg on saxophone and piano and Nygel Anderson on drums. Both Joe and Nygel are from FSU. \nThe Post-Modern Jazz Trio is steeped in the Jazz Tradition. They’ve studied and performed the music of the last century. In the process they have come upon some fundamental shifts in their understanding of the music as a whole. They bring the music of their youth and all their various musical experiences to meet the “jazz tradition”. According to the Post Modern Jazz Trio\, “We converse with it in a way that both acknowledges and upholds it – secretly crossing our fingers behind our backs and whispering to each other all the while. We shift gears up and down\, sideways & slantways. We’re never quite sure where we’ll end up. But isn’t that the point?” \nRio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art and music destination located in the heart of Carrabelle. Additional music series performances continue on Saturday\, February 11 with composer and vocalist\, Darryl Tookes\, returning from NYC. And then rounding out the concert series will be Hot Mess with some cool Blues & Zydeco on Saturday\, February 25. Guests will enjoy these talented musical artists while being surrounded by the works of some gifted visual artists. Paintings by Roger Leonard are featured along with works by the talented Bill Owen\, Joe Kotzman\, Pat Moore\, and Bo May. Art by Roger Leonard is on display through the end of February. \nAll musical performances will be enjoyed in an intimate Cabaret-style listening room and are BYOB. Performances will be held at 7:30 pm. Seating is limited. Tickets are on sale online for $22. The historic Rio Carrabelle is located at 102 St James Ave (Hwy 98) in Carrabelle\, FL. This concert series is sponsored in part by INConcert\, the Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Art. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Soldiers
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Black History Month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present a special exhibit to honor our country’s African-American Servicemen. This exhibit will focus on the 473rd\, one of the Black Amphibious Truck Companies that served at Camp Gordon Johnston during World War II\, as well as go into more depth on the segregation and Jim Crow laws that our African-American service members faced.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, January 31\, 2023\, and be on display until Saturday\, February 25.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII in spite of being denied full rights as American citizens. African Americans served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units like Amphibious Truck Companies\, and even these support units worked close to combat and under fire. The 473rd Amphibious Truck Company trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading\, and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The 473rd Amphibious Truck Company\, along with the 471st and 476th who also trained at Camp Gordon Johnston\, went on to be a part of a 21-unit force from the Army that deployed with the 4th and 5th Marines for the campaign on Iwo Jima. A recent find of a full roster of the 473rd is allowing us to research this company’s men. \nThis exhibit will present what has been discovered to date of these men\, who like many African Americans\, served their country with honor in a military that was still segregated and share the types of challenges that were faced by these heroes. The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum continues its campaign to find and preserve the individual stories of the African American men that trained at the Camp and the men and women from the Florida Panhandle that served in WWII. The hope is that the families and descendants of these soldiers may help the museum to learn more about these heroes and their lives. Photos and personal stories of these men are always a much-welcomed addition. The goal of Camp Gordon Johnston Museum is to honor all the men who trained here. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. SUMMARY:Fishing Rubbing Art-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle Artist Association is hosting their annual Fish Rubbing event on Saturday\, February 4\, 2023\, at the St. James Bay Golf Resort in the Fountain Room. The 2023 Fish Rubbing event provides a fun\, hands-on session where participants will make their own piece of unique\, nautical art to take home. This event will feature an Asian theme and will also include food and music. \nGyotaku (pronounced Gee-oh-tak-oo) or the art of fish rubbing is a traditional form of Japanese art. Fish rubbing is a form of printing on rice paper using local fish. Materials and in-person instruction are provided for guests to make a frame-able piece of fish rubbing art to take home. Anyone who would like to make an additional fish rubbing may bring a t-shirt\, apron\, tea towel\, or other cloth item to make a second fish rubbing. The fish rubbing will be done with acrylic paint. \nThere will be two sessions available – 10 am-12pm and 1-3 pm – with tickets presold for each session. Cost is $15 in advance or $18 at the door. All proceeds go to support the Carrabelle Artist Association. For information\, call or text Marian Morris at (850) 294-9664 or email her at morrispottery@gmail.com. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com
