SUMMARY:St. George Island Tour of Homes
DESCRIPTION:After a hiatus in 2021\, the Tenth Annual St. George Island Tour of Homes is back and scheduled for Saturday\, February 12\, 2022. The tour benefits the St. George Lighthouse Association (SGLA). This year’s tour will feature six unique and attractive homes\, from the gated St. George Plantation on the West to the beautiful gulf views on the East End. These homes showcase the distinct architecture\, décor\, landscape\, and vistas on the island. \nHours of the tour are from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. (EST) on Saturday\, February 12\, 2022.  Included on the tour are the Cape St. George Lighthouse and Keeper’s House\, along with the Resort Village Clubhouse and Pool. This year the tour will feature resident artist\, Cory Wright. Cory is a painter who enjoys capturing the essence of light on the land\, sand\, and sea. She is the owner of Cory Wright Gallery & Studio in historic Palmetto\, Florida\, and has paintings held in numerous national and international private collections. Cory has graciously donated an original painting to be raffled off during the tour to benefit the St. George Lighthouse Association.  Cory will be painting en Plein air during the tour and will also be exhibiting her paintings for all to enjoy.  Tickets for the tour will be available online beginning January 1st\, 2022 at www.sgitourofhomes.com or at the Cape St. George Lighthouse Gift Shop and will cost $25.00 in advance or $30.00 on the day of the Tour. \nIn lieu of the typical Friday kick-off event\, at the close of the tour\, a “Thank You” reception will be held in Lighthouse Park from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. for volunteers and tourgoers. Light refreshments will be served. \nSGLA is a non-profit Florida corporation organized to preserve\, maintain\, and promote the Cape St. George Lighthouse.  The Lighthouse was reconstructed in 2008 after collapsing in 2005.  SGLA also built a replica of the Lighthouse Keeper’s House which includes a gift shop and museum featuring a replica of the Cape St. George Light’s third-order Fresnel lens\, partially funded with Tour of Homes proceeds. Funds raised by SGLA are used for the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the Lighthouse\, the Keeper’s House\, and Lighthouse Park. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:January Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The January Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Monday\, January 17\, 2022. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 5:00 pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 6:04 p.m. and the “Wolf” moon will rise at 5:50 p.m. on January 17. The January full moon is called the Wolf Moon because wolves often hunt at night and the howling of wolves could be heard outside Indian villages. As such\, their howling became associated with nightfall and particularly\, the moon amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Thus\, the name for January’s full moon. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Carrabelle History Museum: Shipwrecks of Dog Island
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a fascinating history program about the Shipwrecks of Dog Island. This program features Florida historian\, Chuck Meide and will be held Saturday\, January 15\, 2022\, at 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. There is no charge for this event. \nThis program will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the Category 5 direct hit\, the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899. In prehistory\, Dog Island was used as a campground by Paleo-Indians. It served as a safe harbor for European explorers and smugglers and later for fishermen and lumber tradesmen. Dog Island served as an amphibious training site during World War II. Most recently\, Hurricane Michael uncovered parts of two ships that were shipwrecked during the 1899 event. \nChuck Meide is a maritime archaeologist and the Director of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) for over 15 years. LAMP is a program by the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum to conduct research and maritime archaeology in St. Augustine and the State of Florida. Chuck has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Anthropology with a focus in underwater archaeology from Florida State University and has undertaken Ph.D. studies in Historical Archaeology at the College of William and Mary. \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. Sponsored by C-Quarters Marina\, Sunset Isle RV Resort\, and Shaun Donahoe Realty. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Seating will be limited and masks are optional. Attendees are asked to follow health guidelines including social distancing and sanitizing hands.
