DESCRIPTION:The October Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Wednesday\, October 20\, 2021. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 6:00 pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 7:03 p.m. and the “Hunter’s” moon will rise at 7:21 p.m. on October 20. This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon\, Blood Moon\, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago\, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it is time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see foxes and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close\, the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor\, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Climb on Wednesday\, October 20\, 2021\, from 6-9 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising full moon.  Guests can also enjoy the fire pit (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. The museum and gift shop will be open for browsing and shopping. \nThe climb to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse rewards bold climbers with breathtaking views of the bay. The cost is $8 for adults and $3 for kids. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Due to the popularity of the Full Moon Climbs\, advance reservations are required for those who wish to climb the lighthouse tower during this event. Call 850-697-2732. \nA limited number of climbers (max of 7) are allowed at one time. There will be a time limit for viewing from the top.  Guests who would like a more leisurely climbing experience are welcome to enjoy one of the daytime climbs available every Wednesday through Sunday. DESCRIPTION:*To keep our residents and tourists safe\, we are following guidelines established by the CDC and canceling this event until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience.*\n\nThe St. Marks Lighthouse Quarters will be open to the public for tours from 10 am to 4 pm on the first consecutive Friday and Saturday of each month.\n\nPrice:\n$2 per person (age 12 and older)\n$5 refuge entrance fee*\n\nTickets are sold at the lighthouse (cash or check only) on the day of the event for specific time slots. Only 15 tickets available per day. Ticket sales stop at 3:30 pm.\n\n*Federal passes must be shown or displayed in the vehicle for entrance to the refuge.\n\nThe St. Marks Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters has major historical significance and recently underwent a costly renovation. We ask our visitors to please follow these guidelines while taking the tour:\n– Leave pets outside\n– No food or drink while on the tour\n– No wet shoes\, bare feet\, or wet clothing\n– Refrain from handling or removing any display items\n– Climbing the tower is prohibited\n\n\nThe St. Marks Lighthouse tours are run by trained volunteer interpreters. SUMMARY:Carrabelle History Museum presents a Special Exhibit on Sponge Diving in Carrabelle and North Florida
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a special exhibit on Sponge Diving in Carrabelle and the North Gulf Coast of Florida. This exhibit will be on display from Friday\, October 1 through Sunday\, October 31.  There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. The museum and exhibit are open Wednesdays 12-5 pm\, Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 5 pm\, and Sundays 12 – 5 pm. \nSponging diving started in the Bahamas and moved west to Florida in the early 1800s. From Key West\, it spread up the Florida Gulf Coast. “By 1879\, Carrabelle had the largest sponge fleet in Florida next to Key West”\, according to David Shubow in the Tequesta: The Journal of the Historical Association of Southern Florida. \nFlorida’s tough but soft sponges were considered to be some of the best in the world. Sponges from the northern Gulf were denser than other Florida sponges because of the colder water. Many of them were harvested just off of Dog Island.  This made both Carrabelle and Apalachicola great locations for viable sponging businesses. \nEventually\, “new” diving technology revolutionized the industry. Heavy brass helmets\, dive suits\, and weights\, both weighted belts and lead in the shoes would enable divers to literally walk along the seafloor. They would breathe air through a long tube tethered to the sponge boat above them. While this allowed divers to stay down longer and harvest more sponges\, it was also much more dangerous. \nThis special exhibit will explore the history of sponge diving in Carrabelle and the area. Visitors can learn about the migration of Greek sponge divers to and from Carrabelle. This exhibit will include an authentic\, brass sponge diving helmet used by a former local diver\, a diorama of an open-air sponge market\, early postcard images\, and historical photos of Carrabelle’s sponge boats and local sponge divers plus a fascinating video of sponge diving from the diver’s perspective. \nCarrabelle History Museum is located\, one block from Carrabelle Harbor\, at 106 SE Avenue B\, Carrabelle\, FL.
