SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series – Dr. Sally D. Hacker
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second lecture of 2023! March 23\, 2023\, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory. \nDr. Sally D. Hacker will present on “Dune Grasses\, Sand\, and Coastal Function and Services.” For centuries\, coastal dunes have provided humans with important services such as coastal protection\, recreation\, carbon sequestration\, and biodiversity conservation. They occur at most latitudes on Earth and cover over a third of the world’s ice-free coastline. They form at low-lying coastal margins where sand transported by oceanic waves and wind combines with vegetation to produce dynamic backshore structures. In this presentation\, Dr. Hacker synthesizes field surveys and a suite of interdisciplinary laboratory\, mesocosm\, and computer modeling studies to examine the relative role of dune grasses and sand supply in determining dune shape. She focuses on how dune grasses have transformed sandy US coastlines to produce variable levels of coastal hazard exposure and other critical services. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Apalachicola Area Historical Society: Spring Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Apalachicola Area Historical Society Spring Speaker Series: “The Enduring Botanical Legacy of Apalachicola’s Dr. A. W. Chapman\, M.D.” \nThe Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will present a program on “The Enduring Botanical Legacy of Apalachicola’s Dr. A. W. Chapman\, M.D.\,” featuring Rebecca W. Dolan\, Ph.D.\, as part of their Spring Speaker Series. This program will be held on Saturday\, March 18\, 2023\, at 4:00 PM at the Raney Carriage House\, 126 Market Street\, Apalachicola\, FL. Guests are invited to hear about the legacy of Chapman\, who first published the “Flora of the Southern United States” in 1860. This publication was the first time the plants of this region were depicted and described. This session will include a dive into the fascinating but arcane way plants new to science are named and the archived specimens and documents supporting the process. \nRebecca W. Dolan\, Ph.D.\, is the retired Director of the Friesner Herbarium at Butler University in Indianapolis\, IN. She has written several publications and was a faculty affiliate at the Center for Urban Ecology and Sustainability. She is a resident of Franklin County\, FL. \nAdditional Spring Speaker Series events are scheduled for April 22 and May 20. These Speakers’ events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society held through May on Saturdays\, mid-month\, at 4:00 PM in the Raney Carriage House. Local and visiting history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for quite a few years. Previous speakers have spoken about Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side\, Territorial City St Joseph\, Early Maps of the area\, Niles Register Florida History\, the ice delivery industry\, Cemetery Preservation\, Apalachicola Historic Squares\, and more. \nThe Raney House Museum is located at 128 Market Street at the corner of Avenue F in historic downtown Apalachicola and is open from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\, Tuesday through Saturday.  Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Legend of Tate’s Hell: History Program
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum presents a history program entitled “The Legend of Tate’s Hell.” This program will explore the many facets of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, the fate of Cebe Tate\, and how Tate’s Hell State Forest got its name. The FSU Department of Communications’ 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell\,” will be shown. There is no charge for this event. \nThe film’s opening line says\, “In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry through the continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend\, ballad\, proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom.” Richard M. Corson in American Folklore \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. Sponsored by C-Quarters Marina and Shaun Donahoe Realty. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Seating is limited\, and masks are optional. Attendees are asked to follow health guidelines. SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers’ Series
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries continues its popular writers’ series entitled\, “Pen to Paper” with another interesting program scheduled for Monday\, March 6 at 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The next session will feature three writers\, D. J. Mays\, Tiffany Jo Howell & Ginnah Howard\, who will be discussing Sci-Fi\, Young Adult Fiction and Biographical/ Historical Fiction. \nLocal author D.J. Mays has always been a fan of science fiction. She began as an author with “The Rebel” in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Leroni of Darkover anthology. After that\, she spent years as a research scientist\, publishing actual science rather than science fiction. Only recently has she been able to write full-time. Her trilogy\, Tales of the Rebel League\, is set in the near future after an attempted alien invasion. The books of the trilogy are Liberty Below Zero\, The Key of Three\, and Insight. She plans to continue the series but has also begun work on an unrelated science fiction trilogy\, as well as a non-fiction book about her work with wild and domestic animals. \nSince her early days\, Tiffany Jo Howell has been telling stories of helping her friends get in trouble and instigating mischief. Maybe she never grew up because children still gravitate to her wherever she goes. Perhaps this is why writing in an easy voice for the younger ones comes naturally to her. Tiffany originally hails from Minnesota but now lives with her husband and most perfect cat\, Sweet Pea\, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. One of her favorite writing spots is at the local sports bar with music playing and sweet tea flowing. She will discuss her book\, The Finder’s Tales: Marco. \nGinnah Howard has written several books including I’m Sick of This Already\, Rope & Bone\, Night Navigation\, and Doing Time Outside. Though she didn’t discover writing until much later in life\, she was a lover of books who could be happy for hours in stories. Her favorites were usually English orphans or a girl in the limberlost\, characters wronged by people she loathed. She is a former English teacher with twenty-seven years of experience teaching at the high school level. Upon her retirement she was found she finally had more time to sit down to put words on the page. \nUpcoming Pen to Paper events: \nWednesday\, March 29\, 2:00 pm – Sue Cronkite & Sydney Watson\, on fiction\nMonday\, April 3\, 2:00 pm – Historian & Author\, Dale Cox on local historical non-fiction. **This will be one of his last public speaking appearances. (Reservations are encouraged as seating is limited.)\nMonday\, April 17\, 2:00 pm – Anthony Lee Watkins & Dawn Radford\, on poetry & fiction\nMonday\, May 8\, 2:00 pm – Michael Llado-Davila & Lois Swoboda\, travel memoirs & Children’s books \nThe Carrabelle Branch Library is located at 311 St. James Avenue\, Carrabelle\, FL. These friendly and informal sessions are a delightful chance to meet these local authors and ask questions about their experience. Refreshments will be served. SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers’ Series
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries continues its popular writers’ series entitled “Pen to Paper\,” with another exciting program scheduled for Monday\, March 6\, at 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The next session will feature three writers\, D. J. Mays\, Tiffany Jo Howell & Ginnah Howard\, who will be discussing Sci-Fi\, Young Adult Fiction\, and Biographical/ Historical Fiction. Local author D.J. The trilogy books are Liberty Below Zero\, The Key of Three\, and Insight. She plans to continue the series but has also begun work on an unrelated science-fiction trilogy and a non-fiction book about her work with wild and domestic animals. Since her early days\, Tiffany Jo Howell has been telling stories of helping her friends get in trouble and instigating mischief. One of her favorite writing spots is at the local sports bar\, with music and sweet tea flowing. She will discuss her book\, The Finder’s Tales: Marco. Ginnah Howard has written several books\, including I’m Sick of This Already\, Rope & Bone\, Night Navigation\, and Doing Time Outside. Upon her retirement\, she finally had more time to sit down to put words on the page. \nUpcoming Pen-to-Paper events:\nWednesday\, March 29\, 2:00 pm – Sue Cronkite & Sydney Watson\, on fiction.\nMonday\, April 3\, 2:00 pm – Historian & Author Dale Cox on local historical non-fiction. **This will be one of his last public speaking appearances. (Reservations are encouraged as seating is limited.)\nMonday\, April 17\, 2:00 pm – Anthony Lee Watkins & Dawn Radford\, on poetry & fiction.\nMonday\, May 8\, 2:00 pm – Michael Llado-Davila & Lois Swoboda\, travel memoirs & Children’s books. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com
