SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Soldiers
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Black History Month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present a special exhibit to honor our country’s African-American Servicemen. This exhibit will focus on the 473rd\, one of the Black Amphibious Truck Companies that served at Camp Gordon Johnston during World War II\, as well as go into more depth on the segregation and Jim Crow laws that our African-American service members faced.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, January 31\, 2023\, and be on display until Saturday\, February 25.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII in spite of being denied full rights as American citizens. African Americans served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units like Amphibious Truck Companies\, and even these support units worked close to combat and under fire. The 473rd Amphibious Truck Company trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading\, and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The 473rd Amphibious Truck Company\, along with the 471st and 476th who also trained at Camp Gordon Johnston\, went on to be a part of a 21-unit force from the Army that deployed with the 4th and 5th Marines for the campaign on Iwo Jima. A recent find of a full roster of the 473rd is allowing us to research this company’s men. \nThis exhibit will present what has been discovered to date of these men\, who like many African Americans\, served their country with honor in a military that was still segregated and share the types of challenges that were faced by these heroes. The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum continues its campaign to find and preserve the individual stories of the African American men that trained at the Camp and the men and women from the Florida Panhandle that served in WWII. The hope is that the families and descendants of these soldiers may help the museum to learn more about these heroes and their lives. Photos and personal stories of these men are always a much-welcomed addition. The goal of Camp Gordon Johnston Museum is to honor all the men who trained here. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Where the Tupelo Grows Artist Event
DESCRIPTION:This event is an opportunity to artistically interpret the environment and culture surrounding the region “Where The Tupelo Grows.”  In the United States\, the most productive area for the Tupelo tree is found in the Apalachicola River Basin in the Florida Panhandle.  The nectar made from the Nyssa ogeche Tupelo tree has such a high ratio of fructose to glucose that it does not crystallize. It is a very light\, mild-tasting honey and a highly valued crop.  The unique geography and climate of the Apalachicola River basin have led to the evolution of a culture and way of life that is found nowhere else. An area also considered by some to be the original Garden of Eden. \nAttend our opening reception on Saturday\, February 11\, 2023\, to cast your vote for your favorite work of art! \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum honors Canines and Cartoonists
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, February 28\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 1.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifices of the American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs. However\, did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers\, and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington\, DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy\, who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger and the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. \nFunded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers’ Series
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries continues its popular writers’ series entitled “Pen to Paper\,” with another exciting program scheduled for Monday\, March 6\, at 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The next session will feature three writers\, D. J. Mays\, Tiffany Jo Howell & Ginnah Howard\, who will be discussing Sci-Fi\, Young Adult Fiction\, and Biographical/ Historical Fiction. Local author D.J. Mays has always been a fan of science fiction. She began as an author with “The Rebel” in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Leroni of Darkover anthology. After that\, she spent years as a research scientist\, publishing actual science rather than science fiction. Only recently has she been able to write full-time. Her trilogy\, Tales of the Rebel League\, is set in the near future after an attempted alien invasion. The trilogy books are Liberty Below Zero\, The Key of Three\, and Insight. She plans to continue the series but has also begun work on an unrelated science-fiction trilogy and a non-fiction book about her work with wild and domestic animals. Since her early days\, Tiffany Jo Howell has been telling stories of helping her friends get in trouble and instigating mischief. Maybe she never grew up because children still gravitate to her wherever she goes. Perhaps this is why writing in an easy voice for the younger ones comes naturally to her. Tiffany originally hails from Minnesota but now lives with her husband and most perfect cat\, Sweet Pea\, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. One of her favorite writing spots is at the local sports bar\, with music and sweet tea flowing. She will discuss her book\, The Finder’s Tales: Marco. Ginnah Howard has written several books\, including I’m Sick of This Already\, Rope & Bone\, Night Navigation\, and Doing Time Outside. Though she didn’t discover writing until much later in life\, she was a lover of books who could be happy for hours in stories. Her favorites were usually English orphans or a girl in the limberlost\, characters wronged by people she loathed. She is a former English teacher with twenty-seven years of experience teaching at the high school level. Upon her retirement\, she finally had more time to sit down to put words on the page. \nUpcoming Pen-to-Paper events:\nWednesday\, March 29\, 2:00 pm – Sue Cronkite & Sydney Watson\, on fiction.\nMonday\, April 3\, 2:00 pm – Historian & Author Dale Cox on local historical non-fiction. **This will be one of his last public speaking appearances. (Reservations are encouraged as seating is limited.)\nMonday\, April 17\, 2:00 pm – Anthony Lee Watkins & Dawn Radford\, on poetry & fiction.\nMonday\, May 8\, 2:00 pm – Michael Llado-Davila & Lois Swoboda\, travel memoirs & Children’s books. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com

No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons allowed in each 15-minute time slot. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park. \nView more events at FloridasForgottenCoast.com
